William Burkhard

William Burkhard (* 1896 ; † 1992 ) was a Swiss writer and founder of the International Atheist Party .

Life

Burkhard ran in Basel several times unsuccessfully in elections, for example in 1976 for the Basel City Council and in 1979 for a seat in the Federal Council of States , where he scored more than 2,300 votes against Carl Miville-Seiler .

Burkhard polarized with his conservative views. Especially at an advanced age, he was considered the city original in Basel . The Basler National-Zeitung suggested him in the 1970s as a " candidate for a Nobel Prize ". As part of the Ideas for Basel campaign , the psychophysicist Dorn suggested that he be "canonized" and that a monument called "Williatomium" be erected on the Middle Bridge .

In Basel, he mostly distributed his leaflets in the vicinity of high schools and the Basel University . The content of these leaflets was mostly used for personal settlements with known people from Basel or to spread his theories about space, language and physics, which differ significantly from the recognized doctrinal opinion. His arguments with parts of speech are characteristic of his writings .

"With the universal division of the words of the vocabulary into three kinds of being, it can be proven that God and Jesus do not exist."

Burkhard's estate is in the Basel University Library . Burkhard's letters and leaflets from 1979 to 1988 are also in the State Archives of the Canton of Bern .

Examples of his numerous leaflets

  • Swiss lawlessness (2 A4 pages completely written on with a typewriter) November 21, 1979

“Let us first state: What is the right? What is the wrong? Right is a property-thing word. In many cases it is a circumstance thing word. Namely, when an adjective refers to an action word, it becomes a circumstance word. ... Mr. August Muggli's and I's criminal complaint against public prosecutor Gaston Farine is still pending. "

  • What's that light ? December 15, 1987

“... There are water waves. The light is electricity, magnetism, wave is a false doctrine and a lie of insane idiots. ... Glowing, glowing and flaming are words of activity ... "

Experiment: waves no light

William Burkhard's experiment is remembered as remarkable for his “proof” that light has nothing to do with waves.

Construction:

  1. He put a candle (light) on a chair
  2. He put a bowl of water under the chair
  3. To do this, he positioned a fan next to it

Procedure:

  1. Fan switched off: candle burns heavily; no waves in the water
  2. Fan on lowest level: candle flickers; fine waves visible on the water
  3. Fan at maximum: candle blown out (= no light); strong waves!

Conclusion: waves are the opposite of light!
