William C. Norris

William Charles Norris (born July 14, 1911 in Red Cloud (Nebraska) , † August 21, 2006 in Bloomington , Minnesota ) was an American computer pioneer. In 1957 he founded the Control Data Corporation (CDC), from which, among other things, the supercomputer manufacturer Cray Research emerged . Norris was a Nebraska farmer's son who showed an early interest in technology.

By 1932 he studied electrical engineering at the University of Nebraska. He then worked at Westinghouse. During the Second World War he served in the Navy and participated in the decryption of German radio messages. He used the experience he gained there after the war at Engineering Research Associates (ERA). ERA was acquired by Sperry Rand and Norris was Vice President of Sperry Rand until 1957. That year, Norris left the group with the design department and founded CDC.
