William Douglas of Douglas († 1274)
Sir William "Longleg" Douglas of Douglas (* between 1200 and 1220; † between 1270 and October 16, 1274 , probably in Fawdon) was a Scottish nobleman .
William Douglas came from the Douglas family , who had owned properties in Scotland as crown vassals since the 12th century . He was the eldest son of Archibald of Douglas († 1240). After his death he followed him as Laird of the feudal barony Douglas including Douglas Castle . He also bought the Fawdon estate in Northumberland in northern England . His younger brother Andrew Douglas became the progenitor of the Douglas of Lothian family (also Douglas of Dalkeith ). William Douglas stood for the underage King Alexander III during the reign . close to the "English Party" under Alan Durward .
On April 6, 1259 he signed a prenuptial agreement with Sir Hugh de Abernethy about the marriage of his eldest son and heir Hugh Douglas with his sister Marjorie Abernethy.
He had at least two sons and a daughter:
- Hugh Douglas († before 1289) ⚭ Marjorie Abernethy;
- Sir William "le Hardi" Douglas († 1298);
- Willelma Douglas ⚭ William Galbraith, 2nd Laird of Buthernock († before 1296).
His heir was probably first his eldest son Hugh and after his death, at the latest in January 1289, his second son William.
