William McElroy Dozier (born February 13, 1908 in Omaha , Nebraska , † April 23, 1991 in Santa Monica , California ) was an American film producer and actor .

Life

Dozier worked as a department manager at RKO Pictures in the 1940s . In 1946 he separated from his first wife and only a few days later married the actress Joan Fontaine , making him brother-in-law of Olivia de Havilland . With Fontaine he founded the film production company Rampart Productions , whose first production was the Max Ophüls - literary film adaptation Letter from a Stranger . Until the divorce from Fontaine in 1951, a few more films were made, including The Liar with Joan Crawford in the lead role. After that he produced almost exclusively for American television. In 1953 he married the actress Ann Rutherford , this third marriage lasted until his death. His most successful television production was the series Batman, produced between 1966 and 1968, with Adam West in the title role. He also produced pilot films for series adaptations of Batgirl and Dick Tracy , but these were never realized. Dozier was also responsible as a producer for the series The Green Hornet , which was discontinued after only one season due to unsuccessfulness, but marked the beginning of Bruce Lee's film career .

In addition to his work as a producer, Dozier was occasionally seen in small roles in front of the camera; the American audience is especially familiar with his voice, as he was the narrator in the original versions of Batman and The Green Hornet .
