Reverend William Ellis

William Ellis (born August 29, 1794 in London , †  June 9, 1872 in London) was an English missionary , author and explorer .

Ellis was trained at the seminary of the London Mission Society since 1814 and in 1816 went to Tahiti via Sydney on behalf of the Mission Society . He first settled on Eimeo , one of the Windward Islands , and traveled from there to the other islands of Polynesia . Here he tried his best to spread Christianity and the " civilization " understood at the time. The missionaries John Orsmond and John Williams and their families supported him .

After a stay on Huahine , during which his wife became seriously ill, Ellis returned to London via Hawaii and North America in 1824 and was employed by the Mission Society as a foreign secretary. He made himself known through a number of writings that also contain scientific and ethnological observations. His wife died in 1835 and two years later he married a successful writer who also worked for the London Mission Society.

Between 1853 and 1856 Ellis made three trips to Madagascar , in whose Christianization he played a major role. He described these trips in Three visits to Madagascar (London 1858). From 1862 to 1865 he stayed again in Madagascar, whose Christianization he described in The martyr church: a narrative of the introduction, progress and triumph of christianity in Madagascar (London 1871). In 1868 a Christian queen took the throne from Madagascar.

William Ellis died in London on June 9, 1872. His second wife followed him seven days later.
