William George Mackey Davis

William George Mackey Davis (born May 9, 1812 in Portsmouth , Virginia , † March 11, 1898 in Alexandria , Virginia) was a Brigadier General of the Army of the Confederate States of America in the Civil War .

Life

At the age of 17, Davis escaped from his parents' home and went to sea. He later settled in Apalachicola , Florida , where he became known as a cotton speculator and lawyer . In 1861 he donated $ 50,000 to the establishment and equipment of the 1st Florida Cavalry Regiment, as whose colonel he was elected.

On November 4, 1862, Davis was promoted to brigadier general and was given command in eastern Tennessee . On May 6th, 1863 he gave up his command again to operate a fleet of blockade breakers for the rest of the war .

After the war, Davis settled in Jacksonville , Florida. He later moved to Washington, DC , where he continued to practice as a lawyer. William George Mackey Davis died on March 11, 1898 in Alexandria, Virginia. his grave is in Remington , Virginia.
