William Glen

William Glen (born November 14, 1789 in Glasgow , † December 1826 ) was a Scottish poet .

Life

He spent some time in the West Indies . Back in Scotland, he started his own company. In 1814 he retired, supported by a Russian uncle. In 1818 he married Catherine Macfarlane, the daughter of a trader from Glasgow. Together with her brother he ran a farm in Port Monteith , Perthshire . He died in poverty. Of all the poems that Glen wrote, only the Jacobite ballad Wae's me for Prince Charlie survived .
