William H. Chapman Nyaho

William H. Chapman Nyaho (born December 28, 1958 in Washington, DC ) is an American pianist of Ghanaian origin.

Life

Chapman Nyaho came to their homeland with his Ghanaian parents when he was just a few months old. There he had piano lessons with John Barham and studied at the Achimota School . He continued his education at Oxford University and the Conservatory in Geneva and took lessons from Henri Gautier. He received his master's degree from the Eastman School of Music in New York . He then studied with David Renner at the University of Texas and received his doctorate. After four years as a visiting artist in North Carolina , he taught at the from 1991 to 2002University of Louisiana at Lafayette . He is visiting professor at Colby College in Maine and Willamette University in Oregon and teaches summer courses at Interlochen Summer Arts Camp and Adamant Music School .

As a pianist, Chapman Nyaho has performed in the United States, the Caribbean , South America , Europe , Asia and Africa . He recorded two CDs with works by composers of African origin: Senku and Asa . In a duo with pianist Susanna Garcia , he recorded an album with transcriptions for two pianos by Aaron Copland in 1998 , and in 2001 the CD Variations on a Shaker Melody . Chapman Nyaho also published the five-volume anthology Piano music of Africa and the African Diaspora .
