William Hemsley

William Hemsley (born January 23, 1737 in Queen Anne's County , Province of Maryland , †  June 5, 1812 ibid) was an American politician . In 1782 and 1783 he was a delegate for Maryland to the Continental Congress .

Career

William Hemsley was born on his parents' Clover Fields Farm near Queenstown . Later he was to take over and manage this farm himself. He also embarked on a political career. In the 1770s he joined the revolutionary movement. He held a few local offices in his home country and took part in the war of independence as a colonel in the militia . He was also a Justice of the Peace in Queen Anne's County in 1777, and served in the Maryland Senate from 1779 to 1781, re-serving in 1786, 1790, and 1800. In 1782 and 1783 he represented Maryland in the Continental Congress. In 1788 he was also a member of the convention that ratified the United States Constitution for Maryland. In addition to these activities, he was still busy with the management of his farm. He died there on June 5, 1812.
