William Hugh Montgomery

William Hugh Montgomery (* 1866 in Christchurch , New Zealand , † 1958 in Christchurch) was a New Zealand lawyer , farmer, liberal politician and painter .

Life

William Hugh Montgomery was born in the Opawa neighborhood of Christchurch in 1866. He was the eldest of two sons of the New Zealand politician William Montgomery and his wife Jane , née Todhunter . William Hugh received his first education from a local teacher, then attended Christ's College and then Boys' High School in Christchurch. In 1885 he was sent to England to attend Balliol College at the University of Oxford . There he completed his studies in 1888 with a Bachelor of Arts in law with the highest distinction and worked briefly as a lawyer in England. He then studied art for six months at St Johns Wood Art School and then six months at the Julian Academy in Paris.

In 1890 he went back to Christchurch, first working as a simple lawyer, but was admitted to the Supreme Court of New Zealand a year later . Not long after that he gave up his job and worked on his father's farm " Little River ".

In 1893 he stood as a candidate for the constituency of Ellesmere , in Canterbury for general election, won the mandate and became a member of the House of Representatives in Wellington . In 1899 he was defeated by his opponent.

In 1902 Montgomery married Edina Mary Allen , daughter of James Allen , who was a member of the House of Representatives for the Bruce constituency in Otago . In 1919 Montgomery was awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services as Assistant Director of Base Records in New Zealand .

In addition to his job as a farmer and at times politician, Montgomery devoted himself to painting. He toured Europe, the USA, Mexico, the Pacific and Asia, painting on all of his travels. In the 1920s he visited the Mexican painter Diego Rivera , whom he admired. Montgomery continued painting until his death.

He died in 1958 and, like his parents and siblings, was buried in Barbadoes Street Cemetery in Christchurch .
