William Irving (born May 17, 1893 in Hamburg , † December 25, 1943 in Los Angeles , California ) was a German - American actor.

life and career

William Irving was born in Hamburg, although he made his first film in the United States as early as 1916 at the age of 23 . In the 1920s, Irving played numerous prominent supporting roles in silent films, mostly as a film villain or rival of the main character in comedies. The beginning of the sound film at the end of the 1920s damaged Irving's career; because of his German accent, he received almost only minor roles. In the following years, the corpulent character actor was often cast as a host, waiter or policeman. He starred in several short film comedies of the Little Tramp and 17 films in the comedy trio Three Stooges . He has also had minor roles in a number of classic films, including as cowardly army chef Ginger in the anti-war film Im West Nothing New (1930). In The Great Dictator , Irving can also be seen briefly as a man sitting on a bed, whose ceiling is destroyed by Charlie Chaplin .

In 1941 William Irving's film career ended after more than 220 films. He died two years later at the age of only 50.
