William Jay Hale
William Jay Hale ( January 5, 1876 - 1955 ) was an American chemist.
Life
William Jay Hale studied at Miami University , where he received his master's degree in 1897 . After that, Hale went to Harvard , where he earned another bachelor's degree in 1898, a master's degree the following year and a Ph. D. in 1902 .
In 1900, Hale and Henry Barker Hill published his first scientific publication, Note on 2-phenyl-4-nitrophenol . William Jay Hale was a post-doctoral student in Göttingen and at the Technical University of Berlin . After teaching at the University of Chicago for a year , Hale went to the University of Michigan as an associate professor in 1904 .
Helen Dow, the eldest daughter of Herbert Henry Dow, studied there; they married in February 1917. Helen died of influenza the following year .
From 1919 to 1934, Hale was director of Organic Chemistry Research at Dow Chemical . He then worked as a research consultant.
In 1934 he coined the term Chemurgy .
