William Keeling

William Keeling (* 1578 ; † 1620 ) was a British ship captain in the service of the British East India Company .

Keeling is credited with discovering the Cocos Islands . On the way back from Java to England he is said to have discovered the atoll in 1609. However, this has not yet been conclusively proven.

Were named after him, the Keeling Islands ( North Keeling and South Keeling ) in the Indian Ocean , the Pulu Keeling National Park and a bird that lives only on North Keeling Keeling binding Rail ( Rallus philippensis andrewsi ).
