William Lawrence Scott

William Lawrence Scott (born July 2, 1828 in Washington, DC , † September 19, 1891 in Newport , Rhode Island ) was an American politician.

Scott moved to Erie , Pennsylvania in 1846 and worked in a variety of professions. In 1866 and a second time in 1871 he held the office of mayor of Erie. In 1884 Scott was elected to Congress as a Democrat . He had previously run unsuccessfully for a seat in the US House of Representatives in 1866 and 1876 . He was a member of the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1885 to March 3, 1889. During this time he introduced the Scott Act .

In 1888 and 1890 he was nominated by his party as a candidate for the congressional election, but declined both times for health reasons. Within his party he was a member of the Democratic National Committee from 1876 to 1888 and was a member of the Democratic National Convention in 1876, 1880 and 1888 as a delegate. Scott died in Newport, Rhode Island in 1891 and was buried in Erie Cemetery , Erie. At the time of his death, he was President of the Erie & Pittsburgh Railroad .

William Lawrence Scott was the grandson of Gustavus Scott .
