General Brandon

William Lindsay Brandon , (* 1800 or 1801, near Washington , Mississippi , † October 8, 1890 in Wilkinson County , Mississippi), was a brigadier general in the Confederate Army during the Civil War .

Life

Brandon attended Princeton College , now Princeton University in New Jersey, and studied medicine, but later worked as a farmer and in the civil service. Brandon was 60 years old when the Civil War broke out. However, his age was ignored and he became the deputy commander of the 21st Mississippi Infantry Regiment. He was wounded and lost a leg in the Battle of Malvern Hill on July 1, 1862. It was almost a year before he resumed active service. He was promoted to colonel at the Battle of Gettysburg from July 1 to 3, 1863 and also took part in the Battle of Chickamauga on September 19 and 20, 1963.

On June 18, 1864, he was promoted to brigadier general and assigned to Mississippi, and became head of the Confederate drafting office. This position was hardly satisfactory for him, as there were only a few men capable of military service in this area apart from deserters and the office was closed before the end of the war.

After the war he went back to his farm Arcole and later also spent his retirement there until his death on October 8, 1890.
