William Ludwig Detmold

William Ludwig Detmold (born December 27, 1808 in Hanover , † December 26, 1894 in New York City ) was a German-American surgeon.

The son of a doctor completed his medical studies in 1830 at the University of Göttingen and became a military surgeon for the royal Hanoverian grenadiers. In 1837 he emigrated to the USA, where he became a well-known surgeon who introduced orthopedic surgery in the USA. In 1862 he became professor of military surgery and hygiene at Columbia University . His brother was the engineer Christian Edward Detmold
