Christian Edward Detmold

Christian Edward Detmold (born February 2, 1810 in Hanover , † July 2, 1887 in New York City ) was a German-American engineer.

Detmold graduated from the military academy in Hanover and came to New York in 1826. He initially wanted to join the Brazilian army, but decided to pursue an engineering career in the USA. In 1833/34 he worked for the American War Department and temporarily supervised the construction of Fort Sumter . From 1845 to 1852 he worked in the iron industry and then led the construction supervision of the construction of the New York Crystal Palace as chief engineer . After traveling for a few years in Europe, he became President of the New Jersey Zinc Company.

In later years Detmold lived mostly in Paris. He worked as an art collector and in 1882 published an English translation of the main writings of Niccolò Machiavelli in 4 volumes. In 1885 he returned to New York. His brother William Ludwig Detmold (1808-1894) was a well-known surgeon who introduced orthopedic surgery in the United States.
