William Meredith (born May 14, 1835 in Philadelphia , † August 10, 1903 in Folcroft (Pennsylvania)) was an American chess composer .

William Meredith came from a distinguished family. His father, William M. Meredith, was Treasury Secretary of the United States from 1849 to 1850 .

Meredith initially worked as a lawyer. When it was no longer possible for him to practice his profession due to a protracted serious illness, he turned to writing chess problems from 1870 onwards. 100 of the roughly 200 chess problems he created in this way were commented on by various authors in a book in Alain C. White's Christmas Series in 1916 . Today he is considered one of the first two-story writers in America and a pioneer for the genre.

The name "Meredith" for chess compositions with eight to twelve pieces goes back to William Meredith.
