William Miller (rower, 1905)

William "Bill" Garfield Miller (born March 16, 1905 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † May 1985 in Carlisle , Pennsylvania) was an American rower who won two Olympic silver medals.

Miller, who rowed for the Pennsylvania Barge Club , competed in the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam with Charles Karle , George Healis and Ernest Bayer in a four without a helmsman . In the first round, the Americans defeated the German boat, in the second round, the French did not compete as an opponent. After a semi-final victory over the Italian foursome, the Americans lost to the British foursome in the final and received the silver medal.

In the next few years Miller competed in the single and won the US championship four times in a row from 1930. At the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, five rowers competed in one. In the first heat, the Australian Olympic champion from 1928 Bobby Pearce won ahead of Miller, in the second, the British Leslie Southwood won ahead of the Uruguayan Guillermo Douglas and the Canadian Joseph Wright . Miller won the reunion ahead of Douglas and Wright. In the final, Pearce won with 0.8 seconds ahead of Miller, Douglas got the bronze medal with just under half a minute ahead of Southwood.

Miller turned professional in 1934, at the 1934 World Championships he lost to Bobby Pearce as in 1932.
