William Montgomery (cryptologist)
William Montgomery (* 1871 , † after 1918 ) was Reverend ( minister ) of the Presbyterian Church and British Codebreaker ( "code breaker") that in the First World War in the legendary Room 40 of the British Admiralty worked.
Together with Nigel de Gray and "Dilly" Knox , he succeeded in deciphering the Zimmermann dispatch there in 1917 . This contributed significantly to the entry of the United States into the war and thus to the defeat of Germany .
William Montgomery dealt theologically with the writings of St. Augustine and translated theological literature from German into English . He is particularly well-known for his faithful translation of Albert Schweitzer's story of the research into the life of Jesus , which he published in 1914.
