William Robbins (athlete)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William Corbett Robbins (born August 9, 1885 in Cambridge , Massachusetts , † July 30, 1962 in Washington, DC ) was an American sprinter .

At the Olympic Games in London in 1908 he led the final of the 400-meter run for a long time , but was overtaken at the start of the home straight by Briton Wyndham Halswelle and US runner John Carpenter and came in third. Carpenter was disqualified for pushing neck shaft on the home straight (which was allowed under US rules, but not allowed under applicable British rules).

Two days later, the referees scheduled a re-race with marked lanes, which Robbins and his compatriot John Taylor stayed away from out of solidarity with Carpenter. Neck wave was the only participant in this run to win without a fight.

William Robbins started for the Irish American Athletic Club.
