William Rowley, 2nd Baronet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sir William Rowley, 2nd Baronet ( February 10, 1761 - October 20, 1832 in Tendring Hall, Suffolk ) was a British politician.

William Rowley was born in 1761 as the first son of Rear Admiral Sir Joshua Rowley, 1st Baronet and his wife Sarah (nee Burton). He attended Harrow School from 1774 . In the 1780s he served in the Guards Division . On March 23, 1785, he married Susanna Edith Harland, daughter of Admiral Sir Robert Harland, 1st Baronet . The marriage produced five sons and six daughters.

When his father died on February 26, 1790, he inherited his title of baronet , of Tendring Hall in the County of Suffolk. From 1791 to 1792 he held the office of Sheriff of Suffolk.

Shortly after moving into Tendring Hall, he joined Brooks's Club . In 1793 he commissioned the architect John Soane to renovate Tendring Hall. Like his uncle Clotworthy Rowley and his sons Samuel Campbell Rowley and William Rowley , he was also interested in a political career as an MP. In 1796 he would have liked to run in the constituency of Suffolk, but renounced so as not to endanger the candidacy of Charles Cornwallis, Viscount Brome . When the latter inherited the title of nobility from his father in 1805 and thus left the House of Commons, Rowley saw his chance come, but failed despite Fox's support. Only the retirement of Sir Charles Bunbury, 6th Baronet enabled him to move into the House of Commons in 1812 and belonged to it until 1830.

As a MP, William Rowley supported the Whigs opposition . Among other things, he advocated political easing for Catholics, spoke out on June 17, 1813 against the trade monopoly of the East India Company and in 1815 was against the resumption of the war against Napoleon Bonaparte . Rowley was among the MPs who called on George Tierney to serve as Whigs leader in the House of Commons.

He died on October 20, 1832. His son Joshua Ricketts Rowley inherited the title of baronet .
