William Stewart (1859)

William Stewart (born September 10, 1810 in Mercer , Mercer County , Pennsylvania , †  October 17, 1876 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1857 and 1861 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Stewart attended public schools in his home country and then graduated from Jefferson College in Canonsburg . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in Mercer in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career. He was elected to the Pennsylvania Senate. He joined the Republican Party founded in 1854 .

In the congressional election of 1856 Stewart was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 23rd  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded John Allison on March 4, 1857 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1861 . These were shaped by the events in the immediate run-up to the civil war . From 1859 Stewart was chairman of the War Department's Expenditure Control Committee.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer again. He died on October 11, 1876 in his hometown of Mercer, where he was also buried.
