Career

John Allison was the son of Congressman James Allison (1772-1854). He attended the public schools in his home country. After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession. However, he did not practice this very intensively. Instead, he worked in the hat making and tanning industry. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Whig Party . He was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1846, 1847, and 1849 .

In the 1850 congressional election , Allison was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 20th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Robert Rentoul Reed on March 4, 1851 . Since he was not confirmed in 1852, he was initially only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1853 .

After the dissolution of the Whigs, Allison first became a member of the short-lived Opposition Party and then the Republican Party, founded in 1854 . In the elections of 1854 he was re-elected to Congress for the Opposition Party in the 23rd district of his state, where he could spend another legislative period between March 4, 1855 and March 3, 1857. Both of his times in Congress were marked by the events leading up to the civil war .

In 1856 Allison renounced another candidacy. In the years 1856 and 1860 he took part as a delegate at the respective Republican National Conventions , at which John C. Frémont and later Abraham Lincoln were nominated as presidential candidates. From 1869 until his death on March 23, 1878, he served as the Register of the Treasury for the US Treasury Department .
