William Sutherland Dun

William Sutherland Dun (born July 1, 1868 in Cheltenham , † October 7, 1934 in Sydney ) was an Australian paleontologist .

Dun grew up in Sydney and was from 1890 on Geological Survey of New South Wales , initially on probation and as an assistant to Edgeworth David . He worked closely with Robert Etheridge junior , studied geology and paleontology at the University of Sydney and succeeded Etheridge as paleontologist of the Survey in 1893. In 1933 he retired. From 1902 to 1934 he was also a part-time lecturer in paleontology at the University of Sydney. He also volunteered for the Australian Museum.

He dealt with many areas of paleontology (including paleobotany), but had a focus on paleozoic mollusks and brachiopods from Australia.

1913 to 1915 he was President of the Linnean Society of New South Wales and 1918/19 of the Royal Society of New South Wales.
