William Sykes (* in Sheffield ; † unknown) was an English football player .

Career

Sykes was already in the 1918/19 war season player in the reserve team of Sheffield United and also made headlines as a player for Atlas & Norfolk , a club from Sheffield local football. In January 1919 the press assigned him a “great game” against Tinsley Park , and in March 1919, among other things, his return, according to a correspondent, made a “significant difference” to the strength of Atlas & Norfolk. For the 1919/20 season , the first professional season after the First World War , he moved up to the professional team of Sheffield United. For the first division he was mostly still in the reserve team in the Midland League , his only competitive game for the first team he played on New Year's Day 1920, when he took the place of Bill Brelsford in the right outrunner position and together with Percy Beaumont and Harry Pantling in a 2 : 1 league home win in front of over 30,000 spectators against Preston North End formed the runner-up.

In September 1920 Sykes was allowed a free transfer by the Committee of the Football League and in October 1920 he appeared in the reserve team of Barnsley FC in the Midland League. At Barnsley he was still part of the squad in the 1921/22 season, but was apparently not a full-time professional, so in August 1921, when training began, his absence was explained by the fact that he had another job and therefore trained in the evening. Without having played a competitive game for the first team, the club allowed him to leave the club free of charge in May 1922.

Sykes remained active in the Midland League and played from 1922 for Wombwell FC . In mid-September 1923 he was re-engaged and replaced George Addy in the right wing runner position just a few days . Sykes was still a member of the club up to and including the 1924/25 season, when the club ended the season in last place after two previous final placements in the lower third of the table.
