William Henry "Will" Thompson (born March 10, 1848 in Calhoun (Georgia) , † August 12, 1918 in Seattle ) was an American archer .
At the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis , he won two bronze medals in individual competitions and with his team, the Potomac Archers , the gold medal of the team round.
Thompson had enrolled with the Confederate at 16 and participated in the Civil War until its end. By profession a lawyer (he defended his own son in a murder trial), he was later also enthusiastic about literature and wrote poems in which he processed his war experiences.
Thompson, who, like his brother Maurice, was not allowed to own firearms as a former combatant, is considered together with him as the founder of archery in the USA; so he was one of the founders of the American Archery Association in 1878 , whose first master he was also; by 1908 he won the US championship another four times.
