history

Calhoun, with the capital of Cherokee New Echota , was until December 29, 1835 part of the Cherokee nation, a people of American Indians . When the Cherokee refused to leave their traditional settlement areas, President Andrew Jackson sent the US Army to force the Indians from northern Georgia to Oklahoma . This displacement became known as the Path of Tears .

After the Cherokee were driven from their land, Georgia claimed their settlement areas. These became Gordon County along with other counties . A small town called Dawsonville, named for the owner of a general store, was founded in Gordon County. The place was renamed Calhoun in his honor after the death of Senator John C. Calhoun in 1850. In 1851, Calhoun became the county seat.

Georgia seceded from the Union on January 5, 1861, and Calhoun became part of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War . On May 16, 1864, the Battle of Adairsville between Generals Sherman and Confederate General Johnston was fought near Calhouns .
