William Wade Harris

William Wadé Harris (* 1850 ?; † 1929 ) was a Liberian evangelist and prophet who was considered the "Black Elijah " of West Africa .

He was the founder of the churches of the Harristian Church in the French colony of Ivory Coast , which later spread to Liberia , Ghana and France . He created a cult that combines Christian elements with traditional rites .

Harris was one of the Grebo living in Liberia . He reported that while he was in prison, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to him and announced that he had been chosen to be God's prophet. After his release he moved around as an itinerant preacher, faith healer and exorcist and came to Ghana via the Ivory Coast . Several thousand people were converted through him.
