William de Beaumont, 3rd Earl of Warwick

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William de Beaumont, 3rd Earl of Warwick (also William de Newburgh ) (* around 1140 - † November 15, 1184 ) was an English magnate .

William de Beaumont came from the Anglo-Norman family Beaumont . He was the eldest son of Roger de Beaumont, 2nd Earl of Warwick and his wife Gundred de Warenne. After the death of his father in 1153, he became the heir to his estate and the title of Earl of Warwick . After the death of his uncle Henry of Gower , he inherited his rule Gower in the Welsh Marches after 1166 . For the settlement of Swansea , which had developed around Gower's most important castle, Swansea Castle , he issued a first charter . In 1184 he pawned Gower to the Jewish moneylender Bruno of London . He hardly appeared politically. He made several foundations, including in aid of Pipewell Abbey and Whitby Abbey .

His first marriage was Margery d'Eivile, a daughter of John d'Eivile. After her death, he married Margaret de Percy , the eldest daughter of William de Percy and Alice de Tonbridge, in a second marriage before December 28, 1175 . After the death of her father in 1175, his wife became one of his heiresses, through whom he received possessions with 20 knight's fees . He died in the Holy Land , probably on a crusade. Since his two marriages had remained childless, his younger brother Waleran inherited the estates of the Beaumont family and the title of Earl of Warwick. The pledged Gower was released by King Henry II and fell to the Crown. His wife managed her inheritance herself and did not remarry.
