The Willibrordiplatz is the western forecourt of Willibrordi Cathedral in Wesel . Most of it consists of a green area.

location

Willibrordiplatz is located in the west of Wesel city center between Hansaring ( Bundesstrasse 8 ) and Willibrordi Cathedral. However, it is separated from the Ringstrasse passing to the west by a building of a nursing home. On the north side there is another building of the old people's home and the house at the cathedral , which belongs to the Evangelical Church Community of Wesel. At the eastern end of the square is the eponymous Willibrordi Cathedral and Pastor-Bölitz-Straße runs past it to the south. Large parts of Willibrordiplatz are designed as a park-like green area. Only the eastern edge of the square is designed as a street, and a section of street that runs directly north of the cathedral is also called Willibrordiplatz. This street leads to the closed Großer Markt , which is located on the east side of the cathedral.

The main area of Willibrordiplatz is facing the tower of the cathedral, while today's main entrance to the church is located along the road to the north, which also belongs to Willibrordiplatz.

history

The cathedral changed its appearance over the centuries, but the tower was always on the west side, while the choir faced the Great Market . The Great Market developed into the central Weseler Platz and became the location of the historic town hall and the weekly market, while the area to the west in front of the cathedral was of no such importance. The background was that in the Middle Ages and early modern times the city wall ran almost directly to the west of the cathedral and there was no square there for centuries. The narrow area in between in the area of today's Willibrordiplatz was used for further development. Due to its property as a fortress town, Wesel remained urban development restricted under Prussian rule, which only changed with the process of de-fortification initiated around 1890. In the process of softening, some houses on the adjacent Niederstraße were demolished, creating enough space for a green area to be created. This is how today's Willibrordiplatz came into being in the 1890s.

In January 1900 the new building of the Israelite elementary school was inaugurated on Willibrordiplatz. The school moved to the direct vicinity of the Wesel synagogue , which had been located south of today's Pastor-Bölitz-Straße since 1840. During the Nazi era, the school had to close in 1935 and in 1945 the building was completely destroyed. A building on the north side of the square, on the other hand, survived the Second World War and was used as an apprentice dormitory from the 1950s and then as a youth center. Since 1994 it has been a Protestant community center under the name Haus am Dom . The old people's home on Willibrordiplatz was built from 1953 to 1954 and a new building was added in 1991.

From 1951 until it was closed in 1966, the Wesel – Rees – Emmerich line ran along the edge of the square . Since 1988 there has been a memorial on the area of the square for the Jewish citizens of Wesel who were murdered during the time of National Socialism. It is shaped like a Star of David and bears the inscription “ My harp has become a lament, my flute a cry. "
