Willie Hightower (trumpeter)

Willie H. Hightower (born October 1888 in Nashville , † December 1959 in Chicago ) was an American jazz musician ( cornet , trumpet ).

Hightower played in New Orleans between 1908 and 1917 in a group called American Stars . Together with the pianist Lottie Frost he also accompanied the vaudeville show The Smart Set ; In 1917 he married Frost. With The Smart Set he worked at the Strand Theater in Jacksonville (1916–1917), then in Mississippi (1917), before moving to Chicago at the end of the decade. Hightower played in Chicago bands in the early 1920s. In 1925 he became a member of Carroll Dickerson's group ; then he played in his wife's group, Lottie Hightowers Nighthawks , who recorded in 1927 with Richard M. Jones for the Black Patti label .

In the 1930s he worked again with Dickerson, but also as a theater musician; In 1933 he worked with Andrew Hilaire in 1933. Around 1940 he ended his activities as a musician.
