Willie Jones (drummer, 1929)

William "Willie" Jones (* 20th October 1929 in New York City ; † 9. April 1993 ) was a drummer of modern jazz that was active mainly in the 1950s.

Live and act

As an autodidact, Jones essentially taught himself to play the drums. He started in Thelonious Monk's band in 1953 and then played with Cecil Payne , Joe Holiday, Charlie Parker , Kenny Dorham , Elmo Hope (1955) and JJ Johnson . He also stepped in for Max Roach in his quintet with Clifford Brown . In 1955 and early 1956 it was part of the first edition of Charles Mingus' Jazz Workshop (until it was replaced by Dannie Richmond because he allegedly played inadequately in an up tempo interpretation of Cherokee ). After that, Jones was employed by Randy Weston . From 1956 to 1959 he was Lester Youngs' drummer . In 1961 he played in the Arkestra of Sun Ra . In the later years of his life he was mainly occupied with anchoring a jazz education in the schools of his hometown.
