William "Willie" Penman (* 1886 in Falkirk , † August 2, 1907 in Glasgow ) was a Scottish football player .

Career

Penman came from Carron in the Falkirk district and also played for the local football club Carron Thistle . He then played in Scottish junior football for the Glasgow Ashfield club , which was one of the strongest junior clubs at the time. When he won the final in the Scottish Junior Cup in May 1905, he was not part of the squad, but later in the year he was regularly in the squad in both league and cup games, and appointments to selection teams soon followed. In February 1906 Penman represented the Glasgow Junior League against the Irish Junior League in a 2-1 victory and in April 1906 he was part of a selection team of players from Scottish Junior Football for a game in Birmingham against a selection of the Birmingham & District FA . Despite a 2-0 defeat, the Penman , who was on the middle runner, was praised in the English press as "effective in attack as well as defense" and also drew English professional clubs' attention. With Ashfield, he meanwhile won the Glasgow Junior League and the Glasgow Junior Cup in the 1905/06 season .

At the end of August 1906, the English second division Bradford City signed Penman, who was attested by the press as having "quite a remarkable conception of the middle runner game for his age". Manager Peter O'Rourke offered him for the first time on October 13, 1906 in a 1: 2 away defeat against Stockport County , but his appearance in the unfamiliar center-forward position was so "bad" that he returned to his original position during the second half Center runner was withdrawn. On this he managed Bradford's hit with a “wonderful long-range shot in the upper corner of the net”. Another goal was scored by Penman in the 1-0 success in the second round match of the FA Cup 1906/07 against Accrington Stanley , a round later they failed with the same result in front of 20,000 spectators, including 4,000 Bradford fans who had traveled with the first division team Liverpool FC . While the position of center runner was occupied by Gerald Kirk at the beginning of the 1906/07 season , he was regularly used from December 1906, but lost his place on the team in early March to Sam Higginson and ended the season with 15 league appearances.

Penman had to undergo an operation in the Glasgow Western Infirmary in early August 1907 because of appendicitis . Although he telegraphed his club Bradford City about the successful operation on August 2 , he died the following night. His funeral took place with great sympathy, and among the mourners were representatives of his two clubs Bradford City and Ashfield.
