Willis Group Holdings was an Irish company with corporate headquarters in Dublin and operational headquarters in London and New York City . The group of companies was active in the insurance and financial services industries and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange . In early 2016 , it merged with Towers Watson to form Willis Towers Watson .

history

The company's history goes back to the 19th century: Henry Willis & Co. was founded in London in 1828. In 1990 the company merged with the US company Carroon & Black and the company Willis Carroon Group was created . In 1998 the company was acquired by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and then restructured. The company has operated under its current name since 1999 and has been listed on the New York City Stock Exchange under the WSH name since 2001 . The company operates around 400 branches in around 120 countries and employs more than 20,000 people. In 2008 the company Hilb Rogal & Hobbs was taken over.

In 2009 the company acquired the former Sears Tower in Chicago , the second tallest building in North America. As a result, the group also acquired the naming rights to the building. So far, what was once the tallest building on earth was known as the Sears Tower .

Willis in Germany

In Germany the history of Willis Group to the year 1858 back, where in Bremen , the Insurance -Unternehmen C. Wuppesahl was founded. After several mergers of the insurance brokerage companies Carl Jaspers Sohn from Hamburg , Industrie Assekuranz GmbH & Co. from Frankfurt am Main and C. Wuppesahl Assekuranzmakler from Bremen, Jaspers Wuppesahl Industrieassekuranz GmbH & Co. KG (JWA) was founded in 1998 . In 2002, the majority takeover by Willis Group Holdings Ltd. with simultaneous change of name to Willis GmbH & Co. KG for Germany. Willis Germany has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of the British holding company since 2003 .

The seat of Willis GmbH & Co. KG is located in Frankfurt am Main. There are branches in Bielefeld, Bremen, Hamburg, Hanover, Cologne, Munich and Stuttgart. Willis Germany employs a total of around 420 people and looks after a premium volume of around EUR 1.0 billion . German subsidiaries are JWA Marine GmbH based in Bremen and interRisk Risk Management Consulting GmbH based in Frankfurt am Main.
