Marko Šuštaršič , (born November 13, 1927 in Cerknica , Yugoslavia (today: Slovenia ); † March 27, 1976 in Ljubljana ) was a Yugoslav painter and graphic artist . He was an important representative of the artistic avant-garde of Yugoslav painting after the Second World War .

life and work

Marko Šuštaršič studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana from 1947 to 1953. From 1956 to 1957 he made study trips to Paris and in 1962 further to Amsterdam and The Hague . He had his first exhibition as part of the " Group of 53 " in 1953, in the Modern Gallery in Ljubljana.

The “Group of 53” was characterized less by a uniform content or stylistic orientation than by the common exhibition possibilities. With his personal style, Šuštaršič was looking for a broader international space to develop. His oil paintings were characterized by a special new figuration that was colorful and almost comic- like and depicted landscapes or houses with objects scattered in them. He was represented with three oil paintings as a participant in documenta III in 1964 in Kassel in the “ Aspects 1964 ” section. Marko Šuštaršič had numerous other exhibitions at home and abroad.

He received several awards for his work, including the Prešeren Fund Prize in 1962 . He spent most of his life in his apartment and studio in Ljubljana.
