Willis H. Ware

Willis Howard Ware (born August 31, 1920 in Atlantic City , New Jersey - † November 22, 2013 ) was an American computer engineer.

Ware studied electrical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania (Moore School) with a bachelor's degree in 1941 and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a master's degree in 1942. He was then until 1946 in radar development at Hazeltine Electronics Corporation. In 1946 he became one of the members of the team that built an early computer ( IAS computer ) under the direction of John von Neumann at the Institute for Advanced Study . In 1951 he received his doctorate from Princeton University . He stayed on the IAS project until 1951 and was with North American Aviation in 1951/52. In 1952 he went to Rand Corporation , where he stayed for the remainder of his career. In 1992 he retired.

In 1993 he received the Computer Pioneer Award and in 1984 the IEEE Centennial Medal. He was a member of the National Academy of Engineering , the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery and the IEEE .
