Willy-Brandt-Platz is located directly in front of the main train station on the south-eastern edge of the old town . It is about 150 meters long and 40 meters wide, which means that it takes up an area of around 6000 square meters. Bahnhofstrasse runs along its western edge . The bus station has also been part of Willy-Brandt-Platz since 2003. This extends north of the actual station forecourt as far as Schmidtstedter Straße. The Kurt-Schumacher-Straße branches off to the east.

The space through the main train station is of great importance for public transport. Four tram lines stop on its west side and the Erfurt bus station is on the east side of Willy-Brandt-Platz, where the regional and some city bus lines stop, while other city buses stop at the tram stop on the west side. The square itself is a pedestrian zone and is used for events as well as a set-up area for street cafés, making it one of the most important central squares in Erfurt along with Domplatz , the fish market and the Anger .

history

The square, which for a long time was only called the station square or station forecourt, was created in the middle of the 19th century in connection with the construction of the Thuringian Railway in 1847. It only became an urban square around 1900 with the completion of the new main station (1893) the one and the station hotel (1905) on the other hand as representative buildings.

On March 19, 1970, it gained importance through a visit by Willy Brandt to Erfurt. He met with Willi Stoph at the station hotel for the first German-German summit . This meeting was accompanied by the cheering Erfurt population on the square. This was the reason to rename the square to Willy-Brandt-Platz after reunification.

At the same time as the renovation of the Erfurt main train station in 2002, Willy-Brandt-Platz was redesigned and given its current appearance.

Development

The station building of the main station from 1893 is located on the south side. The "island building" behind it, which defines the silhouette, was torn down in connection with the construction of the "ICE station". The west side is occupied by the old Erfurt main train station from 1847, while the Hotel Erfurter Hof from 1905 with its extension, the Kossenhaschen house from 1916, is on the north side . The east side is the location of the InterCity Hotel, a new building from the 1990s. On the eastern part there is a fountain that is integrated into the access to the underground car park under Willy-Brandt-Platz. Since 2009 there has also been a neon sign on the roof of the Erfurter Hof, reminding of Brandt's visit.
