Willy A. Flegel (born June 3, 1960 in Dieburg ) is a transfusion specialist and immunohematologist. He is adjunct professor at Ulm University , professor (adjunct) at Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington DC, USA and guest professor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology , Wuhan, Hubei, China.

Life

Flegel studied medicine at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , where he was also awarded a Dr. med. received his doctorate . Further training to become a specialist in transfusion medicine took place at Ulm University. An extended research stay took him to the University of California, San Diego . At the DRK blood donation center in Ulm, Flegel worked as a department head in the field of blood group serology and immunohematology. In 1998 he completed his habilitation and became a private lecturer and, in 2005, an adjunct professor at Ulm University. Since 2009 he has been with the Department of Transfusion Medicine, NIH Clinical Center, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland.

research

In the field of immunohematology he worked on the rhesus blood group and in 1998 clarified the molecular cause of the weak expression in the rhesus factor . He proved that the weak antigen D is caused by protein changes, which, in collaboration with Franz F. Wagner, refuted a scientific opinion that had been established over decades. In 2000, he demonstrated that the RHCE was the original gene from which the RHD gene was duplicated.
