Willy Hess (composer)

Willy Hess (born October 12, 1906 in Winterthur ; † May 9, 1997 ibid) was a Swiss musicologist and composer .

Life

Hess studied composition, music theory and piano at the Zurich Conservatory , as well as musicology at the universities of Zurich and Berlin . From 1931 he lived as a freelance music writer and composer in his hometown. He also worked from 1942 to 1971 as a bassoonist in the Winterthur City Orchestra . From 1951 he published 14 supplementary volumes to the Beethoven complete edition. His compositional work is entirely committed to traditional tonality . It includes several sonatas , among others for bassoon and small orchestra, for viola and piano , for viola and bassoon, for viola solo, for flute and cello and for flute and piano. In 1959, Hess received the Carl Heinrich Ernst Art Prize for his musical work. Willy Hess' estate is in the Zurich Central Library .
