Willy Enrique Meyer Pleite (born August 19, 1952 in Madrid ) is a Spanish politician of the left-wing Izquierda Unida (IU). From 2004 to 2014 he was a member of the European Parliament in the group GUE-NGL .

Meyer joined the illegal Communist Party of Spain (PCE) in 1970, during the Franco dictatorship , and emerged as a student leader in the Faculty of Economics at Complutense University in Madrid . Because of this activity, he was arrested several times until 1975 and sentenced to prison terms twice.

Meyer is a member of the board of the PCE and the alliance Izquierda Unida (IU), in which the PCE was absorbed in 1986. He is responsible for international relations and is considered an expert in the field of security and defense policy . From 1987 to 1991 Meyer was a city councilor in Cádiz , and from 1996 to 2000 he was a member of the Spanish Parliament , where he was a member of the Interior and Defense Committees. He was also a member of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and the North Atlantic Assembly ( NATO's Parliamentary Assembly ) during this period .

In the European elections in 2004 he was elected to the European Parliament , where he was the only Spanish member of the GUE-NGL parliamentary group until 2014 , of which he is also a member. In his first term in the European Parliament, he was a member of the Committee on Fisheries , the Committee on Petitions and the Committee on Foreign Affairs . In the European elections in Spain in 2009 he was re-elected as the top candidate on the joint list of the IU and the Catalan green party Iniciativa per Catalunya Verds (ICV). In the legislative period 2009-14 he was no longer a member of the Fisheries Committee, instead he is deputy chairman of the Committee on Petitions.

Willy Meyer is married and has two children. His daughter Amanda Meyer is also a member of the IU board of directors.
