Wilmya Zimmermann (born July 30, 1944 in Heerlen , Netherlands ) is a former SPD politician .

Life

Zimmermann attended high school and trained as a medical-technical assistant from 1961 to 1963. Then she worked as an MTA in the hospital in Heerlen and at the University of Nijmegen . In 1970 she moved to Germany to work at the University of Marburg . She later moved to the University of Erlangen , where she was a member of the staff council from 1990.

In 1986, Zimmermann joined the ötv union (today ver.di ), and is also a member of the Workers' Welfare Association , the Bavarian Red Cross , Amnesty International , Greenpeace , the Marie-Schlei Association and the European Union , where she is the state executive Bavaria was a co-opted member.

She lives in Poxdorf .

In 1988 Zimmermann joined the SPD. There she was deputy district chairwoman and was a member of the board in the Bamberg - Forchheim subdistrict for several years as a cashier. In addition, she was chairman of the AsF in the Bamberg sub-district and deputy chairman in the Upper Franconian district and in the Bavarian regional association.

In the European elections in 1994 she was elected to the European Parliament , to which she belonged for an electoral term until 1999. There she was a full member of the Committee on Civil Liberties and Internal Affairs and of the delegations for relations with Romania and Bulgaria . She was the first MEP to be elected in a country of which she was not a national. In the 1994 elections, active and passive voting rights for EU foreign citizens were introduced.
