Wim Westerveld

Wim Westerveld , (born December 25, 1961 in Sinderen , Netherlands ) is a Dutch designer and professor of typography in the field of visual communication at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art (spelling: Weißensee Kunsthochschule berlin). From October 2013 to April 2017 he was Vice Rector in the area of ​​“Studies and Teaching”.

biography

Wim Westerveld studied graphic design from 1980 to 1985 at the University of the Arts in Arnhem, the Netherlands. During his studies he worked with the type designer Martin Majoor at URW in Hamburg, where they were introduced to the first digital writing system Ikarus.

After graduating, he worked for two large Amsterdam design agencies until 1992: Total Design and BRS Premsela Vonk. During this time he taught typography at the Utrecht University of the Arts.

From 1992 to 1999 Wim Westerveld lived in Berlin and in 1993 co-founded the design agency de blik, where he worked until 1996. In 1996 he worked with the type designer Lucas de Groot , and in 1997 he worked with the graphic designer Matthias Wittig under the name "Fernkopie" (until 1999). Your book design has received several awards from the “ Stiftung Buchkunst ” and “Stichting Best Verzorgde Boeken”.

From 1999 to 2008 Wim Westerveld lived again in Amsterdam. He continued his collaboration with Matthias Wittig and joined the Neon design studio as a partner in 2002 (until 2008). Since 2008 he has been professor of typography at the Weißensee Kunsthochschule berlin and has lived in the German capital again since then.

Wim Westerveld has been working and teaching as a designer in the field of visual communication since 1985. His specialties are corporate design, information design, book design, culture and education. He publishes in specialist books and magazines.

Teaching activities, (visiting) professorships

From 1989 to 1993 Wim Westerveld was a lecturer in typography at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht, from 1990 to 1993 and from 1997 to 1999 visiting professor at the HdK (today UdK Berlin). Another visiting professorship led him to the Merz Academy in Stuttgart (1993–1998). From 2000 to 2005 he was co-developer and lecturer of the Master of Art Editorial Design course, Utrecht. Since 2008 he has been teaching typography at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art.
