The Exter windmill , also called Lindemanns Mühle , is a mill in the Exter district of the East Westphalian town of Vlotho in the Herford district of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany . It has been protected as an architectural monument since 1985 .

description

The mill in Exter is a Dutch windmill with louvre flap blades , which is surrounded on the north side by a wall. In the lower area it is equipped with a passage option. As a special feature, the mill now has an accessible wooden gallery on the south side in place of the previous wall, from which the view extends over the north lip to the Teutoburg Forest. The mill was built with broken sandstones from the area and has six floors with a basement. The visible mill tower is around 18 meters high, the length of the pair of wings is around 23 meters. The rotatable cap was initially turned by hand with a beam construction called Stert in the optimal wind direction. During the thorough renovation and redesign before the First World War, the star replaced a compass rose on the cap. Originally the mill was equipped with two grinding aisles, one each for grist and rye . A wheat meal was added later. Today the mill has only two grinding stages for grist and rye.

Originally the mill tower was plastered. In the mid-1980s, the now disused mill was renovated as a show object. The sandstone was exposed so that the structure of the masonry could come into its own. Despite the sealing, moisture penetrated the wall and led to extensive damage to the wooden structure inside, which was largely preserved.

In the years 2006 to 2009 the mill was repaired again by the association that now runs it. The wooden interior was almost completely replaced. The sandstone tower is from the outside with wood verschindelt , preventing re-entry of moisture. In addition to the entire facility, a bakery and a coach house were added in 2012 . In the half-timbered building "Haus Mühlenblick", completed in 2014, with a simple kitchen, seating for around 70 people is provided. Sanitary facilities are also available for the disabled.

history

The windmill was built in 1850 on behalf of the farmer Friedrich Wilhelm Lindemann. Up to a wind damage in 1961, it was used by three generations of the Lindemann family as a secondary business. In the following years there was further damage to the building and the mill fell into ruin. In the 1980s, the mill from the Löhner association “Vom Korn zum Brot e. V. ”and renovated between 1985 and 1987. After the mill developed into an excursion destination in the following years, serious structural defects appeared again, which made renewed renovation necessary. The association “Windmühle Exter e. V. ”took over the mill in 2005 and took care of the renewed renovation between 2006 and 2009. Today the mill is used for local tourism and for weddings.
