Wings of Fury

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wings of Fury is a horizontally -scrolling shoot-'em-up - computer game .

action

The player takes on the role of a pilot in the US Navy during the Pacific War . He controls an American fighter of the type F6F Hellcat and basically takes off from his aircraft carrier , the USS Wasp , which has got into trouble in the course of the fighting between the Pacific islands. The aim of the game is to eliminate Japanese soldiers and destroy planes, ships and bunkers .

Game principle and technology

The following weapons are available during the game :

  • Machine Gun - The machine gun has unlimited supplies of ammunition and is primarily used against soldiers and aircraft. The latter are immune to all other weapons. The player always has the machine gun.
  • Missiles - Effective against targets such as bunkers, especially armored bunkers.
  • Bombs - Bombs destroy bunkers and soldiers, but not armored bunkers.
  • Torpedo - The torpedo (it is not possible to transport more than one) is used against enemy ships.

The last three weapons mentioned must be refilled in the hangar of the own aircraft carrier; only one type of weapon can be used at the same time.

The player is harassed by all kinds of enemy flak and interceptors during his mission . Occasionally even the home aircraft carrier is attacked by torpedo bombers, especially if you stay away from them for a longer period of time. After falling or being shot down, the player finds himself on the aircraft deck and has to continue his mission from there. The loss of the last available aircraft or the sinking of your own carrier means the game is over immediately.

Production notes

In 1988 versions for the Apple II and PC ( MS-DOS ) were published, in 1989 for the Sharp X68000 and in 1990 for the C64 , Atari ST , Amiga and Amstrad CPC . The Amstrad CPC version was published by Loriciel, but it was developed and released for all other systems by Brøderbund .

After entering the name "c olin was here" in the Amiga version, new resources such as e. B. further aircraft ("life") made available; The weapons could now also be used and changed without limit. The latter as well as the "refueling" in the air by pressing the F key (for fuel ) enabled the player to fly longer campaigns without having to return to the aircraft carrier at home - but the increased risk of a torpedo attack on the same had to be accepted .

While the versions for Amiga and Amstrad CPC came up with a light blue background, which only turned black during night operations, the C64, PC and Game Boy versions had a black background throughout. In the Japanese version of Brøderbund Japan for the X68000 computer you control a zero against US troops with otherwise the same gameplay.

The fact that in order to solve the game in the role of an American one shoots at Japanese people who run screaming out of their houses, led mainly to the indexing by the then BPjS , which was published in Federal Gazette No. 42 on February 29, 1992. This did not affect the defused version for the Game Boy Color . The indexing expired after 25 years, at the end of January 2017 the game was removed from the list.

In 1999 there was a port for the Game Boy Color from Mindscape Group . This Game Boy Color version has been defused and landing and controlling the machine has been made much easier. In addition, there were no people running out of the houses on the Game Boy. In addition to the official conversions, fans later created numerous remakes for newer platforms, including Wings of Fury 2: The Return , which introduces the latest 3D graphics while retaining the 2D game mechanics.

publication Rating
Amiga joker 51%

The Amiga Joker criticized an unoriginal action, "terribly jerky" scrolling, an inaccurate collision query and sparse graphics. The game was notorious for its clumsy controls; landing on the aircraft carrier in particular was considered difficult.
