Winifred Asprey
Winifred "Tim" Alice Asprey (born April 8, 1917 in Sioux City , † October 19, 2007 ) was an American mathematician and computer scientist . She was one of only 200 women to receive a doctorate from an American university in the 1940s. She was involved in establishing a contact between IBM and Vassar College , an American elite university in Poughkeepsie .
While studying at Vassar College, she met Grace Hopper , who later introduced her to computer science, while Asprey was involved in the Universal Automatic Calculator project in Philadelphia .
Life
Asprey was born in Sioux City, Iowa. Her parents were Gladys Brown Asprey and Peter Asprey Jr. They had two brothers: chemist Larned B. Asprey (1919-2005) and military historian and author Robert B. Asprey (1923-2009).
Academic career
Asperey earned her Masters of Science (1942) and PhD (1945) degrees from the University of Iowa . She later taught math and computer science at Vassar College for over 38 years . From 1957 until her retirement in 1982 she was a professor in the Faculty of Mathematics.
