The Rhenish winter rambur (also Jägerapfel , Teuringer or Menznauer Jäger ) is a variety of the cultivated apple (Malus domestica) .

description

The apples are large to very large and flat and round. The fruits often show irregularities, and the halves of the fruit are usually built unevenly. The smooth, greasy skin is initially light green, later it becomes golden yellow to light red and on the sunny side it is marbled to dark red when the apple is ripe. Light-colored peel points are widely distributed on the fruit. The yellowish-white to white flesh tastes sweet, slightly spicy, is low in acidity and rich in vitamin C . The fruits smell intense. The stem sits in a deep and wide cavity that can be delicately rusted . A tendency towards specks is mentioned.

use

The variety does not make high demands on soil and climate, but moist soil is an advantage. The tree is resistant to diseases and pests, it is only somewhat susceptible to powdery mildew and fruit tree cancer . The cultivation is possible in sheltered locations up to heights of 1000 m. The growth is medium to strong. As flowering occurs mid-late, there is little risk of late frost. However, the wood is not particularly frost-hardy. The winter rambur is a triploid variety and therefore unsuitable as a pollen donor.

The Rhenish winter rambur is ready to be picked in mid-October and ready to eat from December to March, if stored appropriately until May.

The variety can be used as a commercial apple , table apple and for the production of fruit juice and brandy , although some sources cast doubt on whether the variety achieves the necessary quality for a table apple. On the other hand, it is only through baking, for example, as a baked apple or in a cake, that the true taste benefits become apparent with a typical, slightly sour aroma.
