Winzerscher Garten in Bielefeld

The Winzersche Garten (alternative spelling Winzer'scher Garten ) is a park in Bielefeld that is named after the former Villa Winzer . It lies below the Johannisberg and thus forms the western end point of the Bielefelder Pass, which is important for the East Westphalian part of the Teutoburg Forest .

History until 2004

In 1869 the textile entrepreneur Carl W. Winzer had his villa built on a plot of land below the Johannisberg with a view of Bielefeld city center. In the years that followed, the winemaker gradually expanded the garden of his house and, in addition to the green spaces, also had a stone archway and a tuff grotto built. After Winzer's death in 1898 and the departure of his widow, the Dürkopp and Oetker families acquired the property in 1921. When air raid on September 30 during the 1944 World War II the villa winery was destroyed.

In 1953 the city of Bielefeld bought the site. In the purchase agreement, the city administration confirmed the intention to include the villa grounds in the green spaces of Johannisberg. Accordingly, the aforementioned areas have been designated as green spaces and landscape protection areas since 1955. In 2008 the area, which was characterized by wild growth, was recorded in planning and redesign began.

Planning

View of the city center and Sparrenburg

As early as 2002–2004, a revitalization and redesign as well as a "bridge function" of the Winzerschen Garten between Sparrenburg and Johannisberg were discussed. In addition to interested citizens, the German Society for Garden Art and Landscape Culture also took part . In the course of this process, the idea of a redesign was finally able to win the support of the city administration. In 2008 a planning work commissioned by the city was published. This included the stock of the site, the target planning and suggested measures for the renewed use of the area.

The former paths below the Johannisberg were only recognizable by the lack of vegetation and remnants of the wall. The tuff stone grotto and other stone garden furniture were relatively well preserved, albeit overgrown. Based on the recorded condition of the site, the following objectives were specified by the planning office and included in the city administration's templates: Improvement of the walking accessibility of the Johannisberg from the city center, creation of visual axes from the Winzerschen Garten to Sparrenburg and city center, construction of stairs, clearing of vegetation and monument protection of the artifacts. The financing of the renovation project could be secured by the economic stimulus package II .

Implementation and current state

Grapevines in the Winzer's garden

From 2009, as part of the renewal of the entire Johannisberg area, the areas of the Winzer Garten were also renewed as the last construction phase. For this purpose, vegetation was removed and the named lines of sight were established. Through the joint work of Bielefelder Drogenberatung e. V. and the city's environmental company, paths, stairs and walls were exposed. The tuff stone grotto and furniture were also renewed. From 2013, further horticultural measures were carried out, including the planting of 90 vines, so that the park could be opened in June 2014. Since then, the green area has been accessible from both the Johannisberg and the city center. The created visual axes created panoramic views of the Sparrenburg in connection with the city center. A hike between Johannisberg and the castle or the Hermannsweg is also possible on a direct route . At the eastern entrance area, visitors can find out about the history of the place on a display board.
