We need to talk is a German short film that was made as a student film at the DEKRA University for Media in Berlin . The film was shown for the first time in 2017 at the German young talent film festival Bundes.Festival.Film . Directed by Ron Jäger .

action

Often words are not needed to express human feelings. In “We have to talk”, many things seem to stand between the two protagonists and ultimately connect them. In just a few minutes, different ideas appear to each viewer, which the two must talk about. A father visits his son. Apparently there is something important to talk about, but both find it difficult to approach each other.

background

  • The short film is the first part of the director's personal series of father-son stories that describe the rapprochement and alienation of generations. The individual films are self-contained and detached from one another, but conceptually interlocked. Each of the films in the series thinks ahead of its predecessor as if in a chronicle, but always changes location and the specific character ensemble. The successors to the short film are "Scheideweg" and "Insel", also with Andreas Klinger in the leading role.
  • In June 2017 the short film celebrated its premiere at the Bundes.Festival.Film in Mainz.

reception

The short film received the rating "Valuable" from the German Film and Media Assessment Agency Wiesbaden. The jury statement states:

"There remains a feeling of insecurity, which should coincide with the feelings of father and son - in this respect WE HAVE TO TALK turns out to be extremely efficient in the end, despite some concerns and resistance."

The film received an award in the “Cross-Generational” category at the German Generation Film Award. To justify the award, the jury goes on to say:

"It offers numerous interpretations, moves numerous details into the picture, whereby the symbols shown are ambiguous. So the viewer has no choice but to quietly think about it himself. Ron Jäger has succeeded wonderfully with" We have to talk " to tell in a cinematic way about the need for communication between the generations without talking everything to death. " (German Generation Film Award )
