We are Vienna - Festival of Districts , which emerged from the Vienna District Festival Weeks in 2009 , is a cultural festival that takes place annually in Vienna .

history

The Wiener Bezirksfestwochen took place from 1951 to 2008 in all 23 Viennese districts in May and June for a duration of five weeks parallel to the Wiener Festwochen . The close cooperation with the community districts resulted in partial festivals, each named after the community district: For example, there were Margaretner district festival weeks or Floridsdorfer district festival weeks . In 2008, Ursula Stenzel ( ÖVP ), the district head of the 1st district of Innere Stadt , announced the district's participation in the Vienna District Festival.

The festival consisted of around 2,000 individual events each, covering a range of cultural areas from music and dance to art exhibitions, street theater and readings. The venues were just as varied and ranged from the district council buildings to coffeehouses and public parks. Admission to most of the individual events was free.

The longstanding organizer of the Vienna District Festival is the Wiener Volksbildungswerk, a culture and leisure association founded in 1955 with around 300 member associations.

In 2009 the content of the festival was revised and renamed Wir sind Wien - Festival of the Districts . At the same time, the date of the festival was repositioned and will now take place from June 1st to 23rd, with the focus each day in a different of Vienna's 23 districts. The three main elements are:

  • The festival stage, which is set up every day on a square or in a park in a different district and offers a music program with free admission.
  • Festival projects from art and culture and key topics (2010 “Together”, 2011 “Volunteering”) that are presented in the districts.
  • “District spotpourri” events that are supported by the Vienna Volksbildungswerk / Basis.Kultur.Wien on the recommendation of the district councils.
